May I mention here that after reading this story, that person who you never would suspect of being a hero during wartime is MY DAD. Various mornings I would wake up to a wild bird drinking out of the aquarium. These birds were birds that my dad mamed while driving to work. I also remember my dad presenting my mother with 7 orphans. They were baby oppossum that my dad thought we could rear after someone had hit and killed the mother. When my mother saw one of them snarl at her, they were bannished to the local monestary. My dad was the local newspaper photographer and everyone in town knew my dad. EVERYONE! He never hunted. My brother and I hunted and when I asked my dad why he didnt hunt he said he had seen enough killing. My cousin Ray Roalofs, a former medic and DAV from the Vietnam war who I recently visited, tells me that my dad was his mentor and hero. He spoke of my dads achievements as a Ranger during WW2 and that his army unit was right there with the marines on Okinawa. My dad also was involved in the invasion of Saipan. My dad was merited with the purple heart on 3 separate occasions each time as a result of wounded in action. Yep! The local photographer born, raised, and died in Bellevue, Ohio.
