May this help keep us in the right perspective...aim high but keep your feet grounded on Gods word. Blessed week to all!!! FGS Devotions 15-21June 2014 “Fallen gOds & Supahstars” Prov. 16:12-18 “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall (v. 18, NIV) Yes, it’s a small letter ‘g’ to emphasize the puny ‘gods’ of this world on the title. This month will be remembered in history as the month when many small ‘gods’ fell. First on the news headlines was a well-known governor related to a popular former president who himself fell from grace and made history as the first person to have been impeached from the office of the country’s highest office. Then, this was followed by three popular and powerful senators who are now detained while undergoing investigation for crimes related to the PDAF or ‘pork barrel scam’. For sports fans, the fallen ones started with a basketball superstar whose team lost a big game due to his physical condition and inability to play, while World Cup fans are still talking about the surprising early exit of two of the world’s most respected teams: defending champions Spain and powerhouse team England. This week’s scripture meditation from the ancient book of Proverbs may sound like more of a reminder for kings and their subjects in its context, but our key verse on pride and a haughty spirit leading to a fall (v. 18) is timeless truth for ‘gods’ and superstars not only in sports and the political arena, but for ordinary folks like you and me. We may never reach heights of popularity or lofty influence like them, but all of us are vulnerable to falling by our own little follies. As sports superstars look forward to the next season or world cup to avenge a loss, perhaps politicians may simply face the music and wait for the next election for redemption. Meanwhile, how do ordinary folks like us learn such precious lessons without the pain of experiencing the hard, loud thud of ‘fallen gods and superstars? The secret lies in our text for this meditation. Simply put – we are encouraged to pursue and invest in wisdom (v. 16) rather than on ill-gotten wealth, and to avoid evil by guarding our way and life (v. 17). We need to read God’s word constantly and put these time-tested principles into practice, thus, assuring us of security and safety in our spiritual journey. As we read the news headlines or even watch our favorite sports teams on television, may these ancient proverbs be used by the Holy Spirit to remind us of our own vulnerability to little falls along the way. Thank God most of us are still free and don’t have to face an embarrassing investigation by an august body such as those politicians. We also don’t have to work out daily while waiting for the next Olympics or World Cup to redeem ourselves. We simply need to trust Jesus who has already redeemed us by His blood, and by living according to His word (Psalm 119:11) we can keep pride from causing our own downfall like those ‘fallen gods and superstars’.
