Maybe I am just getting old and cynical...but this Phil Hughes saga is beginning to erode his respectful memory... When I have lost work colleagues over the years, no matter how tragically...we attended the funeral, ensured the family had our support, grieved and got on with life. There was no way we could approach the management with an open ended grieving period, where work would cease for an indefinite period...There was no sending the ships back to sea with no firm date of re-docking to be just left floating around at the pilot station while we indulged in feeling sorry for ourselves. Indeed when my much loved mother passed away over 25 years ago...I went to work in the morning, attended the funeral at the allotted time and then returned to work later in the day. I miss her dearly...but anything more than how I behaved would have just been self indulgent....and she would have wanted nothing more than we provided. For some reason our sporting fraternity live in some form of parallel universe...Of course the press play a large part in the farce...but please let the guy be put to rest, with all the respect necessary and then just get on with life... Personally, I could care less if another ball is bowled for the rest of the summer...but this episode is taking away from the departed and is becoming more about just how precious all professional sport is becoming.
