Maybe we need as much as possible to run the government like a for profit business and restrict the parts that can NOT be run at a profit to the profits from the parts that can be run at a profit. For a long time, it has been considered reasonable for consumers to borrow up to twice as much as their annual income. Much of our problem is that extreme (Gini index over 40) inequality of income causes speculative bubbles to form and burst, which destabilizes the whole economy. We need higher taxes that actually hit the rich more even in proportion to income than the poor and middle income.
