Maynooth Shuttles Report Sunday the 19th October 2014. GM Loco 088 brought the Craven Set from Inchicore on Saturday Night arriving in Dublin Connolly at 20.20hrs. There, the volunteers, Stephen, Niall, Nicky and Luke watered the carriages and the tanks in the BR heating van. On a lovely sunny morning in Dublin the set was propelled out of Platform 3 by Loco 088 to the Wash Road and brought across to The Boston Yard at Pearse Station. It was intended that we go onto the Down Loop but as the Boston Yard was empty that’s where we ended. Passengers had to be re directed to Platform 1 by our own Joe Fitzpatrick on site. Steam Loco 461 arrived from Connolly Shed and hooked up to the train set and we departed the Yard at 10.40am and we had an on-time departure at 10.50am. Our driver and Fireman was Bobby Jolly and Willie Ferns. An almost full train we made excellent running along the Royal Canal to Maynooth arriving at 11.34am. Watering of the Loco took place on the Down Platform and after the run round we departed at 12.05 pm. 5 minutes down. Another good run back to Pearse Station, arriving at 12.46pm .After the passengers had left the train we were placed in the Down Loop. Loco ran round the train and prepared for the second trip. This was our newly appointed Train Manager; Stephen Comiskey’s first outing as Manager. Excellent job done by Stephen. We had an on-time departure at 14.10pm from Platform 2 (Down Platform) . Running was good until we hit Leixlip Louisa Bridge, here the track adhesion was very poor and the loco began to slip. However with the excellent work from Driver Jolly we arrived slowly into Maynooth twenty minutes down. The Loco was again watered and ran round its train. However as we had now lost our path we had to wait for the Down Local train, which then had to go into Maynooth Yard for stabling. and the Up Sligo arrived into the station. We got away after this train some 35 minutes late and we had some excellent running on the return journey arriving in Pearse Station at 16.35pm. The train was once again placed in the Down Loop. Loco 461 was unhooked and returned light to Connolly Shed. Diesel Loco 088 arrived and hooked up. The set was brought into Platform 7 Connolly Station where it was unloaded. It then continued to Inchicore for stabling. The second train was full to capacity. Between the two trains we carried 579 passengers. Our on board raffle by John Richardson netted a total of €600 profit to the Craven Appeal Fund. Well done John. We were today without one of our senior stewards, David Seymour, David is in the Intensive Care Unit at Beaumont Hospital since last Monday; we wish him a speedy recovery. Our thanks to Loco rep. Mark Walsh & Mark Fletcher Whitehead Depot for their assistance. Report By: Joe McKeown
