Mayor Kos idea to make all journalists wear officially issued, identifiable press vests when reporting from protest sites is just as bad as the now-abandoned plan of special media zones. In a democracy, to uphold the freedom of the press, no government should get to decide who is a journalist and who isnt. Especially not since the Web and citizen journalism have opened up so many new possibilities. I do have an official press pass, and sometimes I wear it visibly around my neck at a protest site, but thats my voluntary decision. I agree there should be transparent rules for police and journalists on how to act in certain situations, but no ID register as a pre-condition for journalistic work.
