Mayor Mike Rawlings spoke today to the Dallas Democratic Forum - TopicsExpress

Mayor Mike Rawlings spoke today to the Dallas Democratic Forum about income inequality. He noted the 39% of Dallas families are asset poor. If they lost their job, they have enough money to last them 90 days, and theyre on the street. 37% of Dallas children live in poverty. This is in Dallas, Texas, he reiterated. Poverty is an entrenched issue in our city, and we cant look the other way. We have to deal with it. As far as taking care of the sick and the poor, Theres a right way, and a wrong way, and were doing it the wrong way. What can we do about this extreme gap? The first thing is to educate people. So hes helped create the 501c4, Support Our Public Schools, and this idea of Home Rule for DISD. A woman rose to question the Mayor. There are good things in DISD. Why don’t we find those good things and try to extrapolate on them, she asked. Why do you want to experiment on our kids? I have no interest in experimenting on anyone, the Mayor responded. But I’ll tell you, this experiment hasn’t worked. Okay? I’ll just tell you that. Look, I’m a shareholder of this thing called DISD. My stock has not gone up. Individual portfolio pieces and products have, but the overall thing has not worked. When I see this flat line that has taken place, I do believe that the only way you make transformative change — and I’m looking for transformative — I want to go from 7% to 45% (graduates ready for college). They only way you do that is transformative.
