Mayor for a day chronicles: I can not impress upon the people of this city the importance of eating locally grown organic food. Multi national corporations have hijacked farming and food production in this country. They are not selling us meat, they are selling us meat-like products, they are not selling fruit, its fruit-like. The adverse health effects cant not be ignored...cancers, diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease and obesity/malnutrition. New Orleans and the region has a great opportunity to be one first places to declare our food independence. Louisiana already produces strawberries, yams, okra, rice, sugarcane, citrus fruits, and corn. The problem is government subsidies allows multi national corporations to sell their food like products, that are shipped in from all over the country, cheaper than food grown 45 mins away in Amite. To counter this, the city of New Orleans and the state should do some subsidies of our own. Lets subsidize the local small organic farmer/grower so they can compete with the corporations. Lets rethink the market place and create one that is fresh, organic, and local. This will create a new commerce(think Hollygrove farmers market), improve the overall health of Louisianaians reducing medical and insurance cost, and liberate us from poison of food like products.
