Mazda Cosmo, Series L10A/B, 1967 - 72 The Cosmo was the first 2-rotor rotary engine powered series car. Mazda chose the name Cosmo to reflect the international cultural fascination with the Space Race. Mazda wanted to showcase the rotary engine as forward-thinking, with a focus on future developments and technology. Cosmos were built by hand at a rate of only about one per day, for a total of 1,519. 343 Series 1 (May 1967 & July 1968) 1,176, Series 2 (July 1968 & September 1972) The L10A (series 1) was powered by the 810 two-rotor 1.0lt engine and produced 82 kW at 7000 rpm and 130 Nm at 3500 rpm, this was mated to 4 speed manual floor shift transmission. The L10B (series 2) saw the introduction of the improved 0813 engine gross output was raised to 95 kW and 140 Nm. The release of the L10B also brought an extra forward gear. Other changes between the models saw a switch from 14 to 15 inch wheels, a larger grill and more air vents. There was little difference in weight and acceleration times from S1 to S2, the later being around 193 km/h top speed and could accelerate to cover 400 metres in 15.8s. Weight for both models was below 950kg making this a very agile little car with the height of just 1165mm. J.
