Me and cynthia are enjoying a late night supper. Hokkien mee, hokkien hae zho with sweet black sauce and king prawn in salted egg batter. Eating in completely blissful silence at 10:52pm when ... *she stands there in the corridor watching us ... Ruien: what are you doing papa? Me: what are you doing up Ruien! Its late dear. Go back to sleep. *she continues to stand there. This time more firm. Ruien: what are you doing papa? I want to know. Me: we are just having supper dear. Ruien: What is supper papa? Me: It is food after dinner dear. You want to join us? Ruien: No. I dont want to finish my food. Me: this is supper dear. You dont need to finish your food. Ruien: No. I dont want to eat vegetables. Me: Ruien. This is supper. There are no vegetables. *she inches forward and sits suspiciously next to us. Then slowly puts her nose to the hokkien mee. A smile breaks across her face. Ruien: can I try this papa? Me: Ruien. This is supper. You can do any thing you want and eat anything you want. In supper there are no rules. *ruiens eyebrows slowly raise in half joy half disbelief. Then smiles even harder. Ruien: can I go wake up ruixin? I also want ruixin to ... Me: NO no no no no ... Dont wake up ruixin k. This is our little secret. With supper, no need to share ok. Its all for you to enjoy … *mwahahahahaha *ruien just sits there and stares at me. A strand of hokkien mee dangling from her mouth. Nothing but a serene calm, like she had heard a piece of heaven drop ... Ruien: papa. I like supper very much. And then she sat there for the next 15 minutes. Silent. No whining. No fidgeting. Just eating her hokkien mee and prawn rolls. A smile from one ear to the next... ________________________ 12th May 2014. 11:27pm The time my eldest became Singaporean.
