Me and my friend Nyrnyr go to Ashville every summer for some good - TopicsExpress

Me and my friend Nyrnyr go to Ashville every summer for some good old fashioned camping and city fun too. This summer, I owe her my life. Ive been friends with Nyrnyr for over 20 years. She has seen my diabetes at its best and definitely at its worst. I am so thankful to her for saving my life one morning on this years trip when we were camped out by the river. By the grace of God, I had the foresight to instruct her for the first time ever in the 20-some years we have been friends, how to use my Glucagon kit. The pics below show some key events to my close call, although we didnt get pics of certain parts, so I will do my best to describe it: 1) I ate pizza at Mellow Mushroom (mistake #1, pizza = baaaaaaad, a real blood sugar no-no... but it tasted oh so good!!!) 2) drinking red wine (just one glass but still… mistake #2, red wine historically = paramedics and life-threatening hypos for me) 3) going to sleep in the tent & never checking my blood sugar during the night, even after knowingly consuming pizza and red wine (I know better but sometimes it can be hard to check sugars when camping) 4) confusion, waking up to Nyrnyr checking my sugar. It was in the 40s. Nyrnyr explained that it was really a lot higher now. 5) My calf hurt really bad (it was sore for several days after). Im missing some parts to this story because I wasnt conscious. What happened was, Nyrnyr had awoken to me making high-pitched whiny noises very early that morning in our tent and I was making weird comments that made no sense. When I wouldnt respond or follow directions and became resistant, she remembered my glucagon instructions from the day before. Because I pulled away from her when she approached with the needle and I wouldnt allow her access to my arm, she recalled my words, Just put it in ANY muscle.... So my calf was where she stuck me. Unconventional, yes… but effective nonetheless. The pics show me drinking wine the night before, then a pic of Nyrnyr quietly sitting by the river after all of this happened. I am so thankful to her for her quickness in responding to this situation. She never panicked, she knew just what to do after I had only explained it to her once. She was calm and level headed. She saved my life. Thank you SO MUCH Nyrnyr!!! I love you!!! :) Im also thankful that I had brought that glucagon kit, and that I had taught her how to use it. Being a T1D always involves a level of danger, but there are things we can do to be prepared and reduce this danger as much as possible. Moral of this story: Every time I drink red wine this happens. Therefore, I will never drink red wine again. Thats it. I mean it this time. Cheers to THAT!!!
