Meant to post last week, but was buried trying to finish a final - TopicsExpress

Meant to post last week, but was buried trying to finish a final story. This story I found particularly depressing. Because this is the type of discrimination that is ubiquitous but almost impossible to fight. How do you fight through laws implicit bias against darker skin? Yet the impacts of this discrimination, common across the spectrum of U.S. society is just devastating. Darker skinned black Americans receive harsher treatment in the criminal justice system, are less likely to advance through corporate America, less likely to be placed in academically advanced classes. Data from the Office for Civil Rights at the United States Department of Education show that from 2011 to 2012, black girls in public elementary and secondary schools nationwide were suspended at a rate of 12 percent, compared with a rate of just 2 percent for white girls, and more than girls of any other race or ethnicity. And researchers say that within minority groups, darker-skinned girls are disciplined more harshly than light-skinned ones.
