Measuring How Fast a Ship Was Traveling To measure the speed of a sailing ship, a rope with knots tied at regular intervals was attached to a log, which was then thrown over the stern of the vessel. The log remained floating in place in the ocean while the ship moved on and the rope attached to the log was extended out. The number of knots passing over the stern was counted fro a given period of time determined by a sand-glass, and then calculated and recorded as the speed of the vessel in knots per hour. We still use the word knots to refer to the speed of a vessel. -Martin J. Hollenberg, MARCO POLO, The Story of the Fastest Clipper
