Medal Race: Well we got down to the club in the rain and cloud - TopicsExpress

Medal Race: Well we got down to the club in the rain and cloud with absolutely no wind. Panic set in a little as we were the final race of the day (had lasers, radials and 470 men before us) so we thought perhaps we wouldnt get a chance to race. However, the cloud lifted enough and some wind came in. A little later than schedule, we launched for the race. Nerves were there of course as we could have obviously still finished 4th, but mostly excitement at the chance of racing for the gold at the Olympic venue. The race was as we had expected in Rio, exceptionally tricky! We got a great start, where we wanted and were executing our plan. Unfortunately our plan wasnt the plan of the wind! Being in a slightly tricky position (shown in the photo below!) of stuck in a fairly large and what seemed like only for us, hole of no wind. Unfortunately rounding the windward mark about 50m behind the Kiwis, with a very shortened and long tack starboard second upwind, meant we couldnt do much but make sure we hung onto the silver. So silver it was again! Rio has been an amazing place to sail and learn about. It is a very tricky venue, which we all expected and we feel we are now in a much better position to make the gains over the next 2 years which we believe will help us win in 2016. A long way to go until that point with a difficult selection trials to try and win first. Thank you for all the support, it means a huge amount to us and we love hearing from everyone when we are a huge ocean apart.
