Media Release 23/08/13 SA Single Seaters back on home soil The SA Single Seaters return to Zwartkops on the 31st of August and should again entertain an expected large crowd for the second visit of Super Series to the Pretoria West venue in 2013. The tight and twisty nature of the circuit lends itself to the nimble and fast Formula Volkswagens and F1600’s and good racing is always guaranteed. The Big Z is also home to most of the single seater regulars who often test at the venue between races. In Formula Volkswagen, Robert Wolk (Midas/Investchem) has one hand on the championship trophy, but Nicholas van Weely (Anglorand) could be the proverbial fly in the ointment in Wolk’s quest for definite title glory, with three rounds still to go. Van Weely beat Wolk off the line at Phakisa both times earlier in August in round 6, and the same move at Zwartkops, should they occupy the front row, could ensure a fair old scrap between the pair given the difficulty in overtaking. Werner Scholtz (Motorvia/Investchem) is another single seater expert who could upset the best laid plans of the previous two. After progressing from F1600’s as the champion in 2012, Scholtz has looked solid all season and a maiden win for him cannot be far off. Young Chris Shotrer (Etana) has also impressed in his rookie season and a podium finish at least is a distinct possibility. Sebastian Lanzetti (IVMA Eng./HRS Insurance) is steadily making his way to the sharp end of the grid, as is Matthew Merton (Hypress/GF Plastics) and the two should keep each other busy in the midfield. Thomas Reib (Grand Prix Transport) returns after missing the last couple of rounds, as does Craig Shorter (Hollard). A new name in the Formula Volkswagen ranks will be that of Jason Campos (Hollard) who will pilot his father Rui’s car, with an eye on a full season in 2014. Jason will be able to make his debut in the wings and slicks formula because the F1600’s, in which he is battling for championship honours, will have their own two races at Zwartkops, Jason’s efforts will be watched with interest, and given the young man’s undoubted talent, the odd feather in the more experienced pack might just be ruffled… In the F1600’s, it’s advantage Keegan Campos (Etana Mygale), albeit by a slender 3 points, over his brother the aforementioned Jason (Etana Mygale) These two will make sure that the silverware comes to the Campos household at season’s end, in the absence of James Temple who is having to sit out the rest of the year while he recovers from a back injury incurred in East London. James’s younger brother Scott Temple (Ferodo/Investchem Mygale) has taken the fight to the Campos siblings in the last two rounds and will do again at Zwartkops, without any regard for championship considerations. An outright brace for him could be a fair bet, while the championship contenders apply caution in their race strategy. Also able to cross the chequered line first is Graham Hepburn (Suburban Panelbeaters Mygale), should qualifying put him in a good starting position. Bevan Williams (Rightway Auto Electrical Mygale) is a reliable points scorer, while Dean Venter (Turnfab Engineering Mygale) could surprise from midfield. Richard Bonnischen (Anglorand Securities) is due to return after missing the last few rounds. In Class B, George Ferreira (GF PMS Mygale) looks to have the championship almost sewn up, but Rick Morris (Investchem Mygale) is still in with a shout and it ain’t over till it’s over as they say. Ian Schofield (Investchem Mygale) will also line up on the grid to add another dimension to the battle for outright victories on the day, which may have a bearing on the bigger picture for Ferreira and Morris. Allen Meyer (Mygale) will be in the thick of the action with Andreas Petrou (Investchem Mygale) in close attendance. Young Alex Gillespie (Mbotyi River Lodge Mygale) has made an impression with regular finishes in his rookie season, and this time should be no different. Formula Ford Kent Class regular will do battle in an Investchem/Xena Chemicals Mygale 99. Issued on behalf of SA Single Seaters by Tony Alves. Contact [email protected] or [email protected].
