Media Release GALLERY OPENS 2015 WITH GRIFFITH COLLECTIONS Griffith Regional Art Gallery is kick-starting 2015 with a gala opening at 6pm this Friday for its first exhibition of the year titled Griffith Collections. The exhibition will run until Sunday February 1. The exhibition features 50 items from the Gallery’s collections including the National Contemporary Jewellery Collection, Couture Collection and the Griffith Regional Art Gallery Collection. The gallery’s new coordinator Raymond Wholohan said Griffith Collections is a beautiful reflection of the Gallery’s history of events, collections and contributions from artists, donors and the community. “With so many diverse and incredible pieces on display, this exhibition is a respectful nod to the many important local artists who have been instrumental in the development of visual arts in Griffith as well as high profile artists, such as Ken Done, who have been quite successful in Australia and internationally,” Raymond said. “Griffith Collections is a fitting start to the year here at the Gallery and will showcase different mediums, periods and styles, which should appeal to the whole community,” he added. Exhibition items will include items from the Gallery’s well-loved event, the National Contemporary Jewellery Collection (NCJA), the only collection of contemporary jewellery in regional NSW. “The Gallery commenced this collection in 1988 and there are currently 56 works which have been acquired from the NCJA, purchased by the Friends of the Griffith Regional Art Gallery, donated by designers themselves or acquired with the assistance of the Australia Council,” Raymond said. The Couture Collection, also featuring prominently in Griffith Collections, is the life’s work of John Clarringbold and Ross Weymouth, consisting of more than 200 garments from bridal to evening and cocktail to race wear, created from 1950 to 2007. Raymond and his colleague Jo-anne Southorn, Public Programs Officer, are also exploring different options for memberships in 2015 and ways to revive support programs such as Members of the Friends of the Griffith Regional Art Gallery, Griffith Arts and Craft Society and the Griffith Regional Art Gallery Management Committee. “These important groups helped support and grow the Gallery collections through fundraising and participation but have faded over time. We hope to bring that network back in whatever way will work with our community.” The Griffith Regional Art Gallery is open 10am-5pm on Wednesdays to Fridays and 11am-2pm on weekends.
