Media Release: No Diversion of Water from Pt. Fortin to Penal In response to certain misinformation provided during TV6s Town meeting held in Point Fortin on Thursday 02nd October, 2014, Water and Sewerage Authority wishes to advise customers in Point Fortin and Environs that their water is safe and meets World Health Organization (WHO) standards for drinking water. The Authority also refutes claims that water from the Chatham water treatment plant, which previously supplied the area, has been diverted to the Penal and Debe areas. The Point Fortin Seven Seas Desalination Plant which produces 4.6 million gallons per day (m.g.d) was commissioned in July 2013, after which, customers in Point Fortin and environs saw their water supply improved from 24hrs, two day per week (24/2) to 24/7 at present. Some of these areas include: Point Fortin Cap de ville Clifton Hill Mahaica Fanny Village New Village Salazar Trace Central Road Techier Guapo Lot 10 Vance River Vessingny La Brea Sobo Village Prior to this, these areas were supplied by 1.2 m.g.d, from the Chatham Water Treatment Plant, which has since been diverted to supply areas such as Erin, Rancho Quenado, Palo Seco, Santa Flora, Waddel Village, Bennette Village, Quarry Village, which saw their supply improve from 24/1 and 24/2 to 24/5 -24/7 presently. It is important to note that the Penal and Debe areas continue to be supplied by the Caroni and Navet Water Treatment Plants and not Chatham Water Treatment Plant. The Authority wishes to underscore that it continues to make great strides in improving the water supplies to customers throughout Trinidad and Tobago. This is evident by the increase number of customers receiving a 24/7 water supply, which went from 18% in 2010 to 62% currently. visit wasa.gov.tt/WASA_Media_Press.html for updates
