Media Release OTML launches Papua New Guinea’s first Community Relations Manual Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has launched Papua New Guinea’s first comprehensive Community Relations manual that details how the mining company engages with its communities and stakeholders in Western Province. The OTML Community Relations (CR) Manual captures over 30 years of accumulated knowledge, experience and successful practices in community engagement. The manual was launched in Tabubil on the 16th of December by Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Nigel Parker and Chief Operating Officer, Musje Werror. The manual was developed by the Community Relations Department of OTML with the assistance of Australia-based consulting firm, Klohn Crippen Berger. Mr Werror said the manual has been developed to meet international best practise standards and also signifies OTML’s outstanding community engagement capabilities. He added that OTML has maintained a harmonious relationship with its communities in Western Province, especially its Community Mine Continuation Agreement (CMCA) regions and other stakeholders such as the National Government, Fly River Provincial Government, faith based organisations, development partners and local businesses. OTML Community Relations Principal Adviser Leonard Lagisa, who coordinated the development of the manual said the manual outlines the socioeconomic and environmental context, legal and policy framework and procedural requirements for conducting community relations activities especially in the mine associated areas. He added that the manual provides a practical guide to OTML CR programmes, methods and activities and promotes consistency and standard procedures in the CR work environment and is also a useful reference material for key government agencies as well as other stakeholders in the mining industry in PNG.
