Media Release Thursday 20 June, 10.40am Information for Selwyn Residents Heavy rain has fallen in some of the eastern areas of Selwyn overnight. The west of Selwyn District has also been affected by a light snowfall. Residents living in Doyleston are being asked to avoid flushing their toilets. Heavy rain overnight has affected the town’s sewerage system. Leeston residents are also asked to minimise toilet flushing. Council contractors are currently sandbagging some properties at risk from high water levels in the Leeston area, and clearing drain blockages and roads where this is possible. Water levels appear to be receding. Darfield has been affected by a light snowfall and in high country areas snowfall has also been light. Council Contractors are also working to clear main roads of snow. Rain is now falling in many areas. A small number of properties in the Lower Selwyn Huts settlement have also been evacuated due to flooding from Lake Ellesmere. Surface flooding has also affected a number of the roads in Selwyn District with light snow on roads in the western areas of the District and surface flooding in some areas in the east of the District. Road users are asked to be very careful when driving. State Highway 73 from Springfield to Arthurs Pass is closed due to snow. All fords on the Hawkins River, Waireka River and Selwyn River in Selwyn District are also closed due to flooding. Leeston library has been shut today. Most rubbish collections are expected to occur as normal today. It’s possible that snow in Springfield may impact on some collections in this township – if this occurs rubbish will be collected as soon as it is safe to do so. Further snow may affect the district today and tomorrow. Snow is forecast to fall to near sea level and to be heavy above 300 metres.
