Media Release – 21st January 2014 Gunns’ receivers called on to release updated information The Wilderness Society today called on the Receivers and Managers of Gunns to release the result of their Pulp Mill strategic review and updated economic and resource analysis prepared to spruik the mill to unknown international bidders. The call comes as the Premier releases another round of special legislation, specifically and explicitly requested by KordaMentha to remove doubt about the legality of the fast-tracked pulp mill permits and kill off a legitimate court challenge. “As the Premier releases the special pulp mill legislation there is an obligation on the receivers to likewise release updated economic and resource analysis for independent scrutiny and review,” said Vica Bayley, spokesperson for the Wilderness Society. “It is seven years since the original fast-tracked permits were approved. Since then we’ve has a Global Financial Crisis, failure of plantation Managed Investment Schemes, collapse of the manufacturing sector, changes in international markets, a restructure of the Tasmanian economy and so many positive developments that seek to move forward. “Now Parliament is being explicitly asked to pass another special piece of legislation to shore up a pulp mill from past era and take Tasmania backwards. “The Receivers have conducted a ‘strategic review’ and other ‘viability’ assessments to assist with marketing the mill. They are explicitly asking the Parliament to pass more dodgy legislation and are obliged to release this updated information.” For comment or more information: Vica Bayley – 0400 644 939
