Media Statement Thursday, 15 May 2014 DENOSA feels the pain of Nigerian parents and supports the #BringBackOurGirls campaign With nursing as a female-dominated profession worldwide, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) feels the pain that Nigerian parents of the more than 200 girls that were abducted by the Boko Haram, and therefore supports the #BringBackOurGirls campaign (see attached photo). With nurses working long hours at health centres, 12 hours to be exact, they shudder to think what could happen to their kids locally if this barbaric act could be tolerated by the world and become a norm. With many hours away from work, and with some of our nurses being single parents, their children could easily become soft targets while they, nurses, are serving the nation. DENOSA deems this act as contrary to African values of Ubuntu, where children are looked after by the whole village and not only by biological parents. This is the opportune time for African nations to unite as one of the continent’s core values is being undermined. Keeping quiet when more than 200 innocent school girls are kidnapped is equal to approving of this act and marks the beginning of the decay of the values that have characterised the African continent for a long time as the cradle of humankind.
