Media release: Canberra Chordsmen go west for the Barbershop Harmony Nationals The Canberra Chordsmen will represent the ACT at the Barbershop Harmony Australia National Convention in Perth from October 9 – 13, 2013. The bi-annual event showcases the best a cappella Barbershop Harmony talents with choruses and quartets competing from every state across the country in partnership with Beyond Blue. The Canberra Chordsmen are Canberra’s premier male a cappella chorus, performing as a group since 1991. They are members of Barbershop Harmony Australia, an association of Barbershop choruses and quartets which has more than 1000 members across Australia. The past 12 months have been groundbreaking for the Canberra Chordsmen in many ways including securing their first sponsorship through ACT Health to promote drinking tap water. “For the ACT Health Promotion Grants Program, this sponsorship has provided an appropriate vehicle to promote the ‘Tap into water everyday’ campaign, as the Chordsmen have been able to incorporate the importance of keeping hydrated into their performances,” said Ros Garrity from the ACT Health Promotion Grants Program. “This is as important for voice production as it is for good health and healthy weight,” Ms Garrity added. The sponsorship has enabled the Chordsmen to engage leading Musical Director Glenda Lloyd, whose twenty three years of Barbershop Harmony experience has positively impacted every element of the program. “It has been a great 12 months working with the Chordsmen and they have improved in every area,” said Ms Lloyd. “Their musicality has increased exponentially and membership has doubled. They have worked really hard and I am really looking forward to strutting our stuff onstage in Perth!” she added. In a historic first the Barbershop Nationals will be broadcast live for free at barbershopconvention.au, and event tickets are available for those keen to attend by searching BHA Convention on ticketek.au For more details go to CanberraChordsmen.org.au or search Canberra Chordsmen on Facebook. The Canberra Chordsmen are proudly supported by the ACT Health Promotion Grants Program to promote ‘Tap into water everyday’. For more information go to health.act.gov.au
