Media release Community to have say on roundabout design 2/12/2014 The public will be invited to have their say on the preferred option for the landscaping of the Captain Cook Highway-Port Douglas Rd roundabout. Papillon Landscape was chosen by Council to complete the design and construction of landscaping for the roundabout and entrance at today’s Ordinary General Meeting. Council will now undertake a consultation process with the Douglas community to choose one of three designs submitted by Papillon for construction on the roundabout itself and report back to Council on the preferred design option. Mayor Julia Leu said Papillon’s proposal provides a unique entrance statement that reflects our natural assets. “While safety criteria imposed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads places major limitations on what can be achieved on the roundabout itself, this proposal ticks all those boxes and creates an entrance worthy of our world-renowned destination,” Mayor Leu said. “It incorporates the existing landscaping onsite into newly created gardens on the verges while using the roundabout as a centrepiece for a uniquely designed piece of art.” The three options for the roundabout artwork design are based on the natural assets of the area ‘Where the Rainforest meets the Reef’. The community is invited to have their say on the three roundabout options via the Community Engagement page on Council’s website. Community Engagement submissions on the roundabout will close on December 22 and work will start on the intersection entrance later this month.
