Media release from Perennia concerning the Strawberry Virus There have been recent media reports about viruses affecting Nova Scotia’s strawberry fields. Can this virus affect my health? No. The viruses only impact the health of plants. There is no impact on human health. So, please ask for and enjoy local strawberries. Will I be able to find local strawberries this year? Yes. But, there will be fewer fields producing fruit because of management decisions made by local farms to eradicate the virus. The estimate is the crop will be 40-50 per cent less than last year. The crop is expected to be back to normal levels next season. Will local strawberries be more expensive? It’s too early to say. Supply and demand, and the market, will dictate prices.
