Medical Students The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Competition System is open for applications to the HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program. The program enables medical students at U.S. schools to participate in a yearlong, mentored, basic, translational, or applied biomedical research training experience at an academic or nonprofit institution other than the NIH, at HHMI’s Janelia Farm Research Campus near Washington, D.C., or at K-RITH in Durban, South Africa.
