Medical Tip of the Day: We need to ask Spock about HDL the good - TopicsExpress

Medical Tip of the Day: We need to ask Spock about HDL the good cholesterol, because its origins began in Vulcan land (only kidding). It adds some spice to the story however! The good cholesterol removes plaque and prevents its deposition on our blood vessels so a total level of 50 or greater needs to be maintained. It can be normal however and their particles low so they have to be measured too. The Apo-1, HDL-P, HDL-C which is most important need to be measured and if low treated. Treatment includes exercise, yes that dreaded word, EPA and olive oil, Crestor a statin medication and Niacin in the form of Niaspan a medication. Unfortunately the over the counter Niacin will not work. Nutritional adjuncts which help would include pomegranate, K2 and red yeast rice. Some experts claim that the HDL profile perhaps may be more important than the LDL and cholesterol but I think it is just as important, not more. The people on Vulcan enjoy an extended life span, 700-800 years so this may be part of the answer!
