[Medical school final year placements] Practicums, like most placements, are often the final module of an academic program, and provide the opportunity to experience and test in practice the skills and theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom. But there are questions over outcomes – specifically, what do we want out of it? Do we want students to gain experience, or do we want them to change the world? Moreover, how can the medical community guarantee the positive impacts of a practicum, and hold institutions accountable for placements that fail to deliver any tangible benefits to either their students or their hosts?
