Meet Charles. The Hardest-Working Homeless Man in Miami - TopicsExpress

Meet Charles. The Hardest-Working Homeless Man in Miami . Charles is a man that I often used to see on my daily bike rides at Haulover Beach. He collects aluminum cans from South Beach to Haulover [approx. 9 miles]… sleeping at various beaches along the way. Now get this: he WALKS the “bike” to each location. “Too heavy to ride”. As you can see, the trailer is connected to a post where the bike seat should be. Once a week, he walks his collection a distance of approx. 12 miles, crossing the causeway to Miami to turn in the load. Each bag weighs approx. 40 lbs – he eventually crushes each can and packs the bags [I’ve seen him with as many as 6 bags stacked] He receives 35 cents/lb. I last saw him a few days before a recent Thanksgiving. We sat down for a chat. His plans? A multi-course meal [used to be a chef by trade] on the beach hibachi, next to the dunes under his favorite stand of sea grape trees. An invitation was extended. Truth be told, he may indeed be happier than 3/4 of the corporate/working world, who knows – that said, give a thought to this man [men, women, children and families like him] as you sit down to your Thanksgiving dinner.
