Meet Dave Nash! Dave has been kind enough to share his inspiring story with us here of how he improved his health through cycling. In my youth I always had a bike but coming into my mid-20s I lost the passion for cycling and did not rediscover it until early Dec 2009 when I got rushed into hospital and diagnosed with diabetes. At the time I was diagnosed I was not producing insulin and had to inject 4 times a day. Since then I have been on up to 10 tablets a day, had the insulin stopped and am now on a new injectable medication with some nasty side effects. In July 2010 I bought a mountain bike which I could not get on with and so in late 2013 (whilst I was off work sick with really high blood sugar and failing sight) I bought a Turbo Trainer and started scouting around for a new bike. I discovered, during research, cyclocross bikes and also a Junior Cyclist in America (Josey Weik) with a blog (joseyweik.blogspot) from which I gleaned much information. He and I started a dialogue and I offered some input to his blog and he offered me advice on the cycling. This acquaintance has expanded to his Mother (Sara) and Father (Matt) whom have both offered me nutrition and cycling advice. Listening to all of the advice I bought a Focus Mares CX 2.0 and started some subtle modification of my eating habits. I ride almost every day now for 6-8 miles at around 4.30am. I have come down from 125kg to 106kg in 6 months (my max weight was 140kg) and, surprisingly, I am now down to 3 medications and have not taken any diabetic medication for 6 weeks. My resistance to depression and my blood pressure have all been positively affected as well. The weight loss is gradual but consistent and the other health benefits make up for the slow loss. I am absolutely convinced that the small changes in my diet and the cycling interest that was reignited are responsible for my return to better health and the support that my facebook friends offer me is invaluable to keeping me going. My view is that if this account helps one person to improve their health through cycling then it was well worth the effort sitting here writing it.
