Meet Ed and Tammy Brewer This month I am going to introduce you to a man and his wife who are rich in intelligence, a love for God, and a happy family. Meet Edward Eugene and Tammy Loretta. Ed was born May 22, 1967 at home in Carthage, Missouri, and then was transported to Webb City, Missouri. “Our lives were quite different,” Ed said. “She lived in one house most of her life, while my parents were evangelists. We were on the road 340 to 350 nights a year. I was in a different town every week, and she was in the same one for eighteen years.” Tammy was born and raised in Joplin, Missouri. “I have two brothers and two sisters, all of which are a whole lot older than I am, so I was basically raised as an only child…as was he,” Tammy said, referring to Ed. “I was adopted after pretty much all of the Brewer family were out of the house. I had parents that were really closer to grandparent age, and that certainly has its benefits… a lot more patience. They had already worked out a lot of the kinks and mistakes they had made on their previous children. They certainly doted on me…probably spoiled me way too much. I was the baby of the family…and I knew it,” Ed stated with a smile. “You spent more quality time with your parents, though,” Tammy interjected. “I was kind of lonely. I pretty much just delved into my books. That’s basically what I did with my youth. I didn’t really have anything else to do, so that’s how I spent my time…reading.” “When we were evangelizing, pretty much how I spent all of my free time was reading,” Ed added. I wish I had a video of Ed and Tammy’s response when I asked them how they met, because to hear the couple describe it and the physical demonstration they gave…was hilarious! “We met in 1983 at church. I was sixteen, and she was thirteen,” Ed stated, smiling. Grabbing Ed’s hand to shake it in an introductory manner, Tammy added in a nasally high pitched voice, “He walked up and introduced himself by saying…Hi, my name is Ed Brewer, what’s your name.” “I was kind of a nerd back in the day…I would have reminded you very much of Steve Urkel.” “His pants were rolled up, the greasy hair, talked kind of nasally….” “Pocket protector, really big glasses…you know,” Ed interjected. “I was like, earthquake please swallow me up, I really don’t wanna shake this guy’s hand!” Tammy said with a laugh. “If you’ve ever seen the show Family Matters…that was us in a nutshell. I was a brainiac nerd, and she was a very pretty, but shy young lady…and the instant I saw her I was smitten and the chase was on!” “But then we met again when I was around sixteen or seventeen years old…” “And I just pretty much picked up where we left off, and the pursuit continued,” said Ed with a smile. The couple later married on August 7, 1988. They have 3 beautiful children together, and 3 charming grandchildren. Tammy still enjoys reading and cooking. Ed enjoys reading, cooking, archery, and singing. “You name it, and I’ll do it!” Ed stated. If the couple were to be described in a sentence or less, they would want it to be said that, “If I were to describe Tammy, I would say she is very transparent, no hint of fraud to her, no pretense…whatever she thinks, whatever she feels, she’s very honest about it. She’s someone that’s very easy to love because she loves with all of her heart…very willing to just be real. As for me, if someone were to sum me up…I can be kind of complex.” “Amen!” Tammy added with a chuckle. “The one thing that, I hope, everybody knows that I’m kind of bright and fairly intelligent…but the one thing I’ve always hoped though, is that people see that my real strongpoint is not my head, but my heart. I try very hard to stay close to God, and stay true to myself. No matter what else happens in this life I have to be able to look at myself in the mirror and be proud of who I am…and I want people to say that the only thing bigger than his head was his heart and his love for people. That’s still a work in progress, but I hope that’s what I’m remembered for. Eggheads and nerds with good brains are a dime a dozen, but take the intellect and couple it with a good heart, and maybe you’ve got something.” “I’m very quiet, and I hope that people can see around my shyness and my quietness and not think that I’m standoffish, but that they could see the person that I am…and see my heart past the quiet,” Tammy added. And that is what I see…these two people have an overwhelming intelligence, but even better than their minds, they both have hearts of gold beneath what you might perhaps assume to be a quiet exterior or a genius brain…Don’t judge a book by its cover. “Search a good heart, but don’t waste life in searching a beautiful face, because beautiful things are not always good, but good things are always beautiful.” Unknown Michaela Leigh
