Meet Jack Paulsen from my hometown of Bandon, Oregon, This is one of those photos that reaches out and touched my heart. Jack was a damn fine man. Women adored him (Including one of my sisters), boys respected him and the whole community loved him and mourned his passing. Jack held a special place for me. As a boy everyone wanted to work for him but I kept missing the boat and even my best friend Dale Williams got a job with Jack. This photo was taken at his station near Frasers and is now a bank. Looking over the door I believe the name of his station was Tidewater Gas & Oil. After leaving home to attend school and work in California I eventually owned my own stations but after my fathers passing I always worried about who my mother could trust to tend her automotive needs so I would call Jack. He would drive all the way south of town to personally take a look at her car after someone else would try to sell her repairs. I would tell him to do anything that was needed but not once did he ever find anything wrong even though others had tried selling her services or repairs. One time I sent him a gift of cash to say thanks and he sent it back telling me that my trust in him was all the payment he needed. What a fine example of a businessman. Having grown up working in that industry, I have no doubt he learned his ethics from others like the Chappells. The comfort he gave my mother in her later years was worth its weight in gold. Indeed he was one of Bandons best diplomats. How I miss him and all that he was. I remember the 100 octane pump well since all of my muscle cars required it and thanks to mom and dad I had more than my share of fill-ups from tis very pump.
