Meet Jacob... This little chap was dumped at our gate this morning along with two young kittens. Sadly Jacob hasnt been very well cared for and as a result he has a number of health issues. Little Jacob has mites AND fleas, his ears are covered in manky hair and dry skin, he has a chest infection a brain parasite causing him to circle and lose his balance and is also malnourished. All of these issues have not appeared overnight and are the result of prolonged neglect. He is very nervous and gets very scared when you try to touch his ears. His claws are very long and his feet are dirty. He has obviously lived in a small, dirty hutch for most of his life. Jacob was probably bought with great intentions, he was probably going to be loved and cherished, but the novelty wore off. This happens all too often. Rabbits are not easy to care for. You need to know what you are doing, do your research and most of all be willing to learn and take responsibility for your rabbit for the next 10 years or more. Jacob was lucky to be left at our gates, we will give him the best chance at recovering. However, it still does not excuse the ignorance. There is so much information out there on how to care for rabbits. You can learn on the internet, but books and get friendly, helpful advice from vets and animal sanctuaries like ourselves. Please never buy a rabbit on a whim. Stop and think about it. You may be saving a rabbit from a sad life. Hopefully Jacob is strong enough to recover. I am sure everybody remembers Digby, the little rabbit who was dumped at the end of our lane. Sadly he didnt make it, the damage had already been done. There are many more rabbits living in tiny hutches and cages just like Digby and Jacob. It shouldnt be that way. We are currently full to bursting with unwanted rabbits. We appreciate all donations of good quality nuggets (not museli please!), hay and bedding to help all of our rabbits. If you are enthusiastic about caring for rabbits you could donate your time. We appreciate all the help we can get as there are so many to clean out and care for! Alternatively you could make a donation towards the care of Jacob and all of the other sick rabbits by clicking on our Donate button on our homepage assisi-ni.org
