Meet Joe Perry. He is cycling from Adelaide to Melbourne as part of Ride For The RAH. 1/ What is your favourite thing about cycling?: There’s so much to love. Ask anyone who knows me and they’ll confirm I love going further, faster and stronger than last time. I love the personal challenge but also the freedom of the bike. You see the road and the country in a whole different light when you’re on your pushie. However for the purpose of this ride I’d sum it up as being able to make a difference while also getting to ride. My profile picture was taken at the start of the 2012 Murray to Moyne. I’ve been coordinating a team in the M2M since 2004 and it’s so rewarding to know your efforts make a real difference. This ride for RAH is an extension of that sentiment. 2/ What sort of bike do you ride? I have two bikes. My good bike is Fuji Altamira that is a joy to ride. It’s the bike I’ll be riding on this ride. I also have a single speed “fixie” I ride to work. This is a steel frame bike that started life as a SE Lager. I think the only original part now is the frame & forks. It’s a hoot to ride too. 3/ What do you look forward to most after a long day on the bike? To share stories from the road over a well-earned beer! 4/ What are you looking forward to most on the Ride for the RAH? See the previous answer! But seriously; also to explore new roads with new like-minded companions. It’s also a new personal challenge. 5/ Why are you supporting START Foundation? I can relate to the mission of using cycling (and sport) to overcome set-backs and to rise above adversity. While it’s nothing like Kerryn’s story, riding my bike has helped me recover from a heart attack 6 years ago. I have always ridden my bike since I was a kid and even rode to work on the morning of my heart attack. I can relate to the trepidation and excitement Kerryn speaks of when making those first tentative pedal strokes. I’m now fitter and happier than I’ve been for 30 years. I therefore fully support the initiatives of START. startfoundation.org.au/#!ride-for-the-rah-2015/cfp7
