Meet Kipper, a 12 year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, who has Degenerative Myelopathy, a neurologic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and difficulty walking due to ataxia. Kipper is working hard with his family to strengthen his muscles and improve his coordination. He did great in the underwater treadmill for his 1st time last week! Did you know that Corgis are the #2 breed affected by Degenerative Myelopathy? Boxers rank 3rd and German Shepard Dogs are 9th. Many people are aware of GSD being considered high risk for this frustrating neurologic degenerative disease, but dont realize that many other breeds can be affected too. Although the prognosis for DM patients is guarded due to its progressive nature, the good news is that there is more available now to help improve quality of life and prolong mobility for these patients than ever before. Rehabilitation therapy, exercise, acupuncture, laser therapy and assistive devices like orthotic devices, harnesses and carts can all help these patients live longer.
