Meet Mabel Mabel is a 15 year old Labrador mix who joined Lizzy’s Hospice House on Friday, September 12, 2014. Mabel is such a sweet little girl. Her little white face is so endearing. Mabel doesn’t ask for much. The only time she makes any sound is to let us know she needs to go outside. Mabel can see and can hear a little bit, is extremely thin (her hip bones and ribs are sticking out), and is having problems being enticed to eat. Eating starts with syringed liquids to peak her interest in food and then move to a variety of solid food, if she is interested in any of it. Cheese is her fav!!! What she likes one minute she is no longer interested in it 2 minutes later – except cheese, which is a constant :o) We try to get Mabel to eat a little something 3-4 times a day. When Mabel joined LHH, we were told she had gained 6lbs, which tells us how much underweight she was when she was found a month before. Her back end is very weak, so she needs help getting up, but she walks on her own pretty well. If she stands still or goes to turn around, her back legs get tangled and her back end eventually starts to sink to the ground. We recently got a full blood workup on Mabel and now know why she is so thin and not interested in food. Mabel is in the stages of advanced kidney failure. Our vet said there is nothing that can be done for her at this point, except to make her comfortable since she will probably only be with us for a few weeks. Mabel is being given Pepcid to settle her stomach and to hopefully help increase her interest in eating. Our goal is to make it the best few weeks possible, including lots and lots of love, a comfy bed to sleep on, and chicken and cheese. Of course, we are hoping she will be with us longer than a few weeks. Mabel is a beautiful little girl and we are happy we can give her the love and comfort she deserves at the end of her life.
