Meet Michael Young After a full and successful career as a Professional Engineer, Mike attended the Ontario College of Art and Design. He graduated with Honours in Sculpture and Installation in 2000. Initially working in clay and cast materials, including bronze, he took additional courses in stone sculpting at Haliburton School of Fine Arts. Sculpting in stone has become his principle form of expression, but he uses other materials as appropriate. He creates work for sale, executes commissions and teaches from the Stone Sculpting studio at the Williams Mill Visual Arts Centre, Glen Williams, Ontario. International and local collectors enjoy Mikes unique works. Mike Young sculpts with limestone, soapstone, marble, alabaster, slate, bronze and other quarried stone materials to create figurative, portraiture and abstract pieces that are thought provoking and frequently tinged with whimsy and humour. Mikes work reflects a personal fascination with geology. His pieces are designed to reveal the true beauty of stone as he plays with the ironic tension of the hard material by often incorporating soft lines. His portraits capture both the essence and likeness of a subject. Following a career in professional engineering, Mike attended the Ontario College of Art and Design, graduating with an honours degree in sculpture and installation. He has taught several workshops including clay portraiture and life sculpture for the Oakville Art Society. He has also participated in numerous exhibits. In 1998 the Royal Winter Fair granted him Most Humorous Award for butter sculpting. Private collections throughout North America and Europe house his work.
