Meet Peekay... Peekay is a 9 year old blue heeler, and belongs to Bec, our Practice Manager. Peekay has a condition called diabetes insipidus, or water diabetes. Ever since she was a pup, Peekay has drunk lots of water and had little accidents - this is because the hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain that allows water to be re-absorbed by her body is insufficient. Diabetes insipidus is a rare condition, and is diagnosed from a series of extensive tests, but is managed well in Peekays case by administering a synthetic hormone desmopressin. This condition means that regardless of whether is on her medication, Peekay must always have access to lots of fresh water, otherwise she can become very sick. This medical condition doesnt stop Peekay from being a ratbag though and harassing her furry friends at home - she shares her house with 4 other dogs and 2 cats! Peekay loves foraging through the cat litter tray, and can play fetch until the cows come home! Tennis balls are her favourite thing...that and belly rubs, sleeping in the tent with her mum when camping, and a big meaty bone to chew on!
