Meet UTAMU’s Prof. Basheka, a Brain Like No Other When you first meet him, the simplicity around him may hoodwink you to think of him as any ordinary man. But his impact transcends his own generation and affects everyone he associates with from his young students, colleagues to people his senior. Indeed Prof. Benon Basheka, the Dean of the School of Business & Managementat UTAMU is no ordinary character. At only 41 years of age, this budding academic boasts of two PhDs (one in public procurement and another in Education Administration and Management); two Masters degrees (one in Social Sector Planning and Management and another in Project Management); two Postgraduate diplomas (one in Project Planning & Management and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply) and Bachelor of arts degree in political science and public administration. Wow, your qualifications are quite many, I tease him. I have a passion for academics; I like to teach and I know that I must learn more to enjoy it, Basheka responds calmly. Even with his qualifications, Basheka does not restrain himself to the comfort of his office like most highly qualified academicians in Uganda. He is a hands-on person who will always be excited to perform teaching duties to students at all levels. In this interview, he actually admitted that he preferred teaching to office roles. I prefer interacting with my students through teaching; it is my passion, Basheka said. And while many professors in Uganda limit their interactions to graduate students, he still enjoys teaching undergraduate students. This semester, I am teaching two courses to first year undergraduate students; Principles of Management and Organisational Theory and Management’ he pleasantly says. Besides these, he has various courses and supervisory interactions with graduate students. Born in a modest family in the hills of Kabale in western Uganda, Basheka has defied all odds to become an internationally recognized scholar in the disciplines of public administration and procurement. A simple google search will give anyone an idea of the numerous conferences he attends annually where he gives key note addresses and presentations in these disciplines. At UTAMU, the School of Business & Management has steadily gained popularity under Prof. Basheka’s deanship. Currently offering thirteen (13) undergraduate programmes and six (6) postgraduate programmes, the school has earned a reputation of empowering both its students and staff with 21st century management skills. I am certain that a graduate from the UTAMU School of Business & Management will be like no other. All curricula of our programmes have been designed uniquely to ensure this, Basheka points out with his characteristic determination. He further adds that his School works hand in hand with the other UTAMU Schoolsto equip all students with skills in ICT and research and ensure practical and technical training. Our graduate will indeed be the 21st century manager, Basheka proudly says. Married with two lovely children, Prof. Basheka is also a Visiting Professor at the Tuffloap Graduate School of Leadership at the University of Limpopo in South Africa and an Adjunct Professor at the School of Political Science and Public Administration of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. He is also an editor of the Uganda Journal of Management and Public Policy studies and an editor in chief of the Journal of Public Procurement and contract management. He has extensively published book chapters and journal articles in refereed local and international Journals with in his areas of academic competence and specialisations. Indeed his brain is like no other.
