Meet another member of The Salvatones! Today, we profile bass Nick Hay. Bass Nick Hay is one of the newest members of The Salvatones, joining us just this season. He was introduced to The Salvatones by long time member Jose Manuel Pietri-Coimbre, with whom Nick has performed. We are lucky to be graced with Nick’s beautiful voice, dedicated musicianship, and kind, gentle presence. His first performance with The Salvatones was Friday’s concert at Our Lady of Refuge, and he is slated to perform for all of our concerts and events this season. Nick was born and grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, where he graduated from Princeton High School. He then went on to study music and major in Voice Performance at the Peabody Conservatory. He currently studies voice with Mark Moliterno. As a working singer, Nick has performed in the chorus with Opera Philadelphia and The Philadelphia Singers, and is currently a member of the New York Virtuoso Singers, Bard Festival Chorale, Collegiate Chorale, and is part of an octet at Saint Catherine of Siena. He has also explored solo operatic coachings with Sing Through Central, most recently as Colline in La Bohéme. Nick has a unique ability called absolute, or perfect, pitch. He has a love/hate relationship with this ability. Absolute pitch can be a blessing, as it makes it easy to learn music quickly, but also a curse as he says it does carry a lot of responsibility. Nick will frequently give the pitch to begin a piece at his church job. In regards to tuning, absolute pitch can cause frustration, but Nick says he is luckily able to adjust if the pitch falls out of tune in a group setting. One thing about singing in ensembles that Nick particularly enjoys is how things click when the singers are really listening to each other. Fitting with his gentle demeanor, he enjoys knowing that as a performer, he is giving the audience pleasure and relief from pain and stress. Aside from ensemble singing, one of Nick’s passions is playing his guitar. He enjoys covering songs as well as writing his own, and he gives Johnny Cash a run for his money with his cover of “Hurt.” A favorite quote of his by Ralph Waldo Emerson is, “Nobody can bring you peace but yourself.” That may be true, but after listening to some of Nick’s songs on youtube, one can’t help but feel at peace listening to his full, lush bass voice. Check out his channel at https://youtube/user/nickbaritone to listen to his covers, original songs, and classical selections. Nick currently lives in Highland Park, New Jersey, with his sweet cat Leonora. We will leave you with another favorite quote of his: “Dont judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant,” by Robert Louis Stevenson. Nick is definitely planting some great musical seeds within The Salvatones. Welcome, Nick! We are glad to have you!
