Meet the Mystery Man of Saltram House, Devon This little carving sits on a corbel in the so called Tudor Courtyard, the oldest part of what is essentially an early Georgian mansion built around a much earlier dwelling. He clasps what looks like a bag or a bun on his head and is neatly bearded and moustachioed. He wears a neat buttoned jacket with either cuffs or gauntlets. We know nothing about him apart from the fact that he is probably carved from local limestone and may possibly have been brought from another family property at some time. There is nobody who remembers him not being there! Perhaps the most interesting thing is that he has some companions who appear half way up walls on domestic and agricultural buildings in the immediate neighbourhood who look very similar but it is only Saltrams that is clutching an object on his head.
