Meet the Snakes: cottonmouth/water moccasin (Agkistrodon piscivorus)! VENOMOUS Found on Jekyll Island Cottonmouths are a semi-aquatic species that we frequently find around Jekyll Islands freshwater ponds and sloughs. Though many in the general public consider these snakes to be highly aggressive, it is unlikely that you or anyone you know has or ever will be attacked by a cottonmouth. When presented with a threat, cottonmouths will exhibit defensive behaviors, like mouth gaping, which are meant to warn potential predators to not come any closer. As long as you give a cottonmouth plenty of space it will likely rely on these defensive displays to keep you away and will not attempt to harm you. photo credit: Breanna Ondich and Lance Paden
