Meet the decorating committee (my wife Kathy and Amy Robertson) for the scholar offices in our new headquarters building. We scholars want to decorate our offices with more filing cabinets. The decorating committee wants plants. My solution, “Let’s create e-files to replace our paper files,” won’t work. Our servers already are packed to capacity with all the data generated by our scholar team over the past 29 years. The decorating committee’s solution, “It’s time to toss files and data you most likely no longer need.” I know the decorating committee is right, but it still feels like having my right arm cut off. Is there a 12-step program for data packrats?
