Meet the grunt sculpin! After a summer of many under the docks - TopicsExpress

Meet the grunt sculpin! After a summer of many under the docks programs, Oregon Coast Education Program teachers and South Slough staff were both squealing with delight at the sight of this odd looking fish. Although it hasnt been spotted in the slough yet by staff, it is a common fish in rocky subtidal habitats where it uses it small snout to poke around for small crustaceans and other organisms in crevices. If they can find it they prefer to hide out in empty shells of giant barnacles, but will settle for the shelter of tires like where we found it. The grunt sculpin is equipped with small plates and tiny spines instead of scales and uses its finger-like pectoral fins to crawl around on the bottom instead of taking a chance at swimming. Learn more about this small fish from the Oregon Coast Aquarium and how it earned its name! #fieldnotefriday
