Meet the staff part 1 Defensive line trainer Mike Latek: Coach Latek has been involved with football for 19 years. He began his career at Eastridge High School in Rochester NY. From there, he attended Colgate University (FCS). He was a stalwart on the defensive line for 4 years where he accumulated 42 career starts, and earned several post season accolades. Coach Latek was invited to an NFL Europe camp. Due to previous shoulder problems, his goal of playing in the NFL were shortly lived. In 2005, Latek moved to Vienna Austria to play for the Vienna Vikings. Between 2005-2007, Latek helped the Vikings to an unprecedented 37-2 record while winning the Austrian Bowl in 2005 and 2007, Eurobowl in 2005-2007. During the 2006 Eurobowl final, Lateks dominant performance garnered MVP honors. To this day, he is the only defensive player ever to become Eurobowl MVP. Latek returned to the Vikings in 2012 as the defensive line coach. He has been instrumental in helping the Vikings return to their dominance. Between 2012-2014, the Vikings have won 3 consecutive Austrian Championships, and a Eurobowl title (2013). The Vikings defense has statistically ranked #1 in almost all categories in Austria, and has been consistently ranked as the top defense in Europe. The defensive line has been a vital part in the success of the defense. Latek has produced some of the best defensive lineman in Europe. Players like Armin Novidi, Florian Grundsteidl, Alex Taheri, and Harald Zipflemayer have been mainstays on the Mens Austrian National Team. Additionally the next generation of young stars such as Peter Baumgartner, Gabriel Plavotic and Marvin Wappl have already showcased their talent for the Austrian Junior National team by winning the junior European Championships. Additionally, they have become steady contributors for the Vikings with Baumgartner winning the 2013 Vikings defensive rookie of the year.
