In September, Emil Schoonejans, former president of USS Runner chapter of WWII Submarine Veterans presented a check for $2029.83 to Long Island Base. Former Runner chapter members have requested that this money be applied to maintenance of their Eisenhower memorial. CDR Zemser advised that he was forced to cancel the Defensive Driving program at the American Legion hall due to lack of response. Only 5 members signed up. Socks: Mike Stroud continues to collect tube socks and toiletries for hospitalized and nursing home veterans at Northport and Stony Brook. You can bring your donations to the Veterans Day luncheon, the Holiday Party or the regular December meeting. Mike will also accept cash donations and make the sock purchases himself. Please don’t forget to make a donation! This is a very worthy and charitable cause that Mike puts a lot of time and effort into. Let’s help him out! Kaps 4 Kids: Ed Wylie reported that there will be a presentation at Good Samaritan Hospital on Monday, 4 November. Volunteers are needed to meet in the hospital lobby at 0915 hours. Ed has also advised that he has established a new website: Kaps4KidsLongIslandBase. CDR Zemser reported that Ed’s Kaps 4 Kids display on behalf of Long Island Base at the Bellmore Fair was well received and successful. He expressed concern that Ed was supported by very few base members. They were: Walt Oemcke, Bill Fuchs, Charlie Hilgendorf and Michael Zemser. CDR Zemser further reported that the Kaps 4 Kids program, thanks to Ed Wylie’s efforts, has remained self-sufficient requiring no funding from the base treasury but… volunteers are still needed for the hospital presentations. West Islip Fair: was held on Sunday, 22 September and netted $648 through merchandise sales, gift card raffle and donations. It was well supported by members who all reported enjoying the camaraderie throughout a long day (albeit a gratifying one) thereby proving that volunteering for Base functions isn’t just about fundraising. The volunteers (who were there from start to finish) were Bob Bachman, Jose Bou, John Burg, Rich Geyer, Mike Carmody, Tony Laub, John Napierkowski, Walt Oemcke, Ed Rivoire and Michael Zemser. Special thanks to Murray Lewis for delivering the sale merchandise.
