If megapixel cameras are being considered, Fredrik Nilsson of Axis Communications recommends that three factors be considered first: whether crystal clear picture detail is needed, whether long distances have to be covered, and whether a large area with few locations for a camera has to be covered. Megapixel cameras can be very effective in situations that meet any of those criteria. The technology has been successfully used in the Nebraska Medical Center, Millennium Aviation on Pennsylvania, and the Mission Consolidated Independent School District in Texas for various reasons. A common need among those three facilities was the need for very clear video surveillance for security measures. “Not so long ago, your choices were limited because megapixel cameras could only operate at low frame rates and performed poorly in low-light environments. But with the advent of HDTV network cameras, where color fidelity and frame rate are guaranteed, HD/megapixel has become a versatile alternative to VGA cameras, said Nilsson.
