Meghalaya Govt to absorb CMJ University students in other educational institutes Written by Meghalaya Times. Posted in Front Page Staff Reporter SHILLONG, May 21: In a respite to aggrieved students of controversy CMJ University, the Meghalaya government has offered to absorb them in other educational institutes to ensure that their academic studies are not hampered and disrupted. But the non-availability of the students’ data of this institute is proving to be the only bottleneck in fulfilling the promise. This was conveyed by the State Chief Secretary WMS Pariat to a delegation representing the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and the CMJ Students’ Union who met him on the issue in his office chamber here on Tuesday. Mentionably, the CMJ University students have recently appealed to the Meghalaya Government to find a way out so that their studies are not affected even as they called on their absconding Chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha to come out of his hiding and clarify the various allegations labeled at the University. The Chief Secretary has informed that the state government is offering to accommodate the students of the CMJ University in other educational institutions, KSU education cell secretary Donald Thabah told reporters after the meeting. “We have also demanded the government to direct the education department of the state to speed up the process of accommodating the students so that their precious time is not wasted,” he added. Thabah however said, “The problem now that was expressed by the Chief Secretary is the non-availability of the data about the students’ population in the university.” It may be reminded that the computers of the CMJ University that contains data had been vandalized. On this, the delegation demanded the Chief Secretary to direct the CID which is probing into the entire case in helping the government to abstract the data. “Since, two of the University’s officials (Registrar and Dy Registrar) are already in the police custody, we have suggested the government to direct the CID to get the detail data from them and make it available at the earliest,” the Secretary said while adding that Pariat did not give the delegation any commitment on the matter. The students’ bodies also asked the government to pressurize the CMJ University to reimburse fees to all the students who were studying in the university as they had paid a huge amount in paying the fees. Mentionably, on April 30 last, Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary - who is also the Visitor of the University - has directed the CMJ University to withdraw all the degrees awarded by it so far and to submit a fresh proposal for the appointment of the Chancellor. The alleged irregularities of the university exposed by the Governor have raised eye brows in the state. Earlier, police have arrested two top officials of the University in connection with an FIR lodged by the Governor’s Secretariat while CM Jha and two of his close aides – the Director Manjeet Kaur and HR Manager Juban Kharpuri - are absconding. Established in 2009, the CMJ University has allegedly awarded a record number of 434 PhD degrees in the past one year apart from registering 490 more Ph.D scholars during the same year.
