Mehriban Aliyeva inspects construction and redevelopment progress at BAKU 2015 Sporting Facilities Azerbaijan`s First Lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Chairperson of the First European Games Organizing Committee Mehriban Aliyeva went on a venue inspection tour to view the progress of some of the Spoting Facilities currently under construction or redevelopment for the European Games taking place in Baku 2015. Her first stop was the National Stadium which will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the European Team Championships Division 3 as part of the inaugural Games. The President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation was joined on her tour by the Minister of Youth and Sports Azad Rahimov who informed the First Lady about the work carried out at the facility, explaining the level of modern equipment and building materials being used in the Stadium’s construction. The majority of work has now been completed and upon completion BAKU will boast a world class venue consisting of a 70,000-seater six-storey stadium with disabled access and seating as well smaller training venue, auxiliary building and 3,100 parking spaces. Landscaping work will also be carried out in the stadium’s surrounds Construction began in November 2012 and is due to finish at the end of February next year. Azerbaijan`s First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva then moved on to review reconstruction work at the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex where she was informed that the complex covered a total area of 46,000 square meters. The repair of the facility will end in January 2015 in plenty of time before the start of the wrestling and judo which is taking place there next Summer. Next up was the Baku Sports Palace in the Seaside Boulevard to, where seating capacity is being increased from 1500 to 1850. This will be home to table tennis and badminton during the BAKU 2015 games. The Final stop on the First Lady’s tour was the National Aquatic Centre. Minister Azad Rahimov confirmed that the Centre,e covering an area of 66,000 square meters is fully compliant with the requirements of the International Swimming Federation. There will be a total of three swimming pools: 50m x 25m pool for competition and two smaller 25m x 20m pool for training as well as diving pool. The venue wil seat 6,200 and will also contain fitness rooms, a SPA center, a restaurant, a 100-seat conference hall, offices and other utility rooms.
