Mein gott in himmell Danny Alexander took a roasting today. First he says Scots would be £1,400 pa better off as part of the Union. When it was put to him these figures included the cost of defence (inclusive of Trident) when Scottish defence costs would only be a fraction of the UKs £50 BILLION defence expenditure he brushed it off. When it was pointed out that these figures included North Sea TAX revenues as UK income he said Oil doesnt come out the North Sea for free. No it doesnt Danny. Companies pay large sums of money for that and their PROFITS are taxed. The cost of new fields and rigs wont be coming out of the Scottish Treasurys pockets. Thats how it works for the UK government. Professor Dunleavy was one of the London School of Economics authors who wrote the report the UK Treasury got its figures from. When Professor Dunleavy, not a Scottish Nationalist, heard this £1,400 figure he said that the UK Treasury either didnt read his report or didnt understand it. Not to be outdone Alexander shot back and said he based his figures on the parts of the report done by a different professor, a Professor Robert Young that same professor pointed out his report wasnt about Scotland but about Quebec and, even then, he used the HIGHEST figure in his report when the lowest estimate was less than half what was quoted. Oh it gets worse. These figures were based on any new nations (in this instance Quebec) having to create 14 new agencies for the executive branch whilst a devolved Scotland already has 10 of these agencies running. Dunleavy reckons the cost has been overstated 12 times. So to get these figures you take the more expensive Quebec model, you KEEP IN UK costs Scotland will remove, TAKE OUT Scottish income the UK will lose, ADD 10 NEW government agencies Scotland already has and multiply by twelve.
