Mejelang hari Asyura, terlitas nak buat, bubur asyura. Tapi takut orang tak pandai makan masakan ini, Mak sendiri pun tak pasti kalau suka. Cecemir akan suka, AbangR. tak suka bubur2...............bubur kacang pu dia tak mahu. Indeed, when I was a little girl in Muar, Tok would cook this bubur asyura, most years, unless inhibited by some circumstances. Needless to say the bubur never lasted too long on the stove. It wast because of pandai-tak pandai or suka- tak suka. We were always hungry and any food Tok cook was delicious. Any food was ok and alright. Eating out, at restaurants was completely alien. Bubur Asyura is easy to make. Rice, in lots of water with beef cuts, the usual bawang putih, bawang merah, handfulls of chick peas, peanuts...............and other nuts available. Leave to boil. I dont remember bubur asyura cokked with chicken. Some add a little santan. Garnishing it with finely cut telur dadar, a dash of celery leaves and daun bawang adds to the aroma and pakaging at serving. Whats the occasion? In celebration of The Day of Asyura of course. The internet provides various cultural traditions in this celebration. It started in the MidEast, somewhere. Maybe Iran. Iranians commemorate this day for their own extra special /historical events. One common reason cutting accross cultures, is people fast on this day, and many fast from 1st. Muharram. Fasting on 10thMuharram is most encouraged. Bubur asyura is also shared between neighbors , just like in sharing food for Iftar during Ramaddan. Its another special day, one, special food is made and shared. A wonderful tradition. Musim2 hujan gini, enak juga makan bubur..............takut terbazir aje. When anybody fell ill, bubur nasi is also served, together with ikan masin. ika bilis, kacang and loads of sambal belacan. Thats the required med to break the fever. I say dont, to sambal belacan.......sambal belacan makes people break out in zillt attacks................beware.
